I’VE NEVER PLAYED ICE HOCKEY BEFORE, how do i start

First off, can you ice skate?
It’s the basis for all hockey skills.
Come to a public skating session. It’s best to just jump on and have a go at ice skating. Once you can skate around unassisted, our Skate School may be the next step. It might take you a term or two of skate school before you are able to start any hockey training. Other can get by practising on their own during public sessions and learning to ice skate on their own.

Hockey School
It’s important to be able to ice skate on your own, before starting hockey training. While there are drills to focus on and improve skating in our hockey school classes, you do need to be able to skate first.
Hockey School runs on Wednesday evenings during school terms. We’ll lend you a full set of hire gear and skates for your first term. It’s strongly recommended to do the full term to really improve your skills, single sessions may be available if you’re looking to join midterm, depending on class capacity. Learn to play sessions will be your first stop, we offer both juniors and seniors classes.
Some players may take a term just doing training before they’re ready for a game, others may start on a midway through.

Stick n puck sessions
Get out there on the ice with a stick and a puck, and practise with friends or just on your own. A great way to get comfortable on the ice with your hockey gear.

Scrimmage games
Casual games, no refs, no stoppages, mixed level all players but we make the lines, so players skills are matched.

iceHQ’s beer league is a fun, non-contact ice hockey league, that runs on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday evenings. We promote a friendly atmosphere and players get together after their games for a delicious craft beer, some food and a chat. A big thanks to our league sponsors the Bad Shepherd Beer Co.

Teams are run independently and are in charge of adding and registering their own players, if you don’t know what team you’d like to join, please post in our facebook group iceHQ Hockey

For new players who want to join their first team we recommend our development team the Bad Shepherds, please join their Facebook group iceHQ Bad Shepherds
